Welcome to

Bhava Yoga Studio

Namaste! My name is Zhanar, and I am a qualified British Wheel of Yoga instructor with a 500 hour certification who has been practicing yoga for over 22 years and I would love to share with you a little bit about my own journey with yoga. First, what is Yoga? Yoga comprises a series of simple but healing exercises, that works to relieve stress and negative behavioural patterns. It promotes balance and health, increasing enjoyment and appreciation of life The exercises are based on theories of the gross and subtle energy systems of the body and body-mind disciplines of Hinduism. In modern society we are faced with many challenges including daily activities, work, pressure, and overstimulation; we are often too tense and charged up to enjoy life. Yoga and meditation work to counteract this effect, opening our heart and enriching our senses so that we feel satisfied and fulfilled, able to appreciate life fully. Yoga holds incredible physical, mental and spiritual significance, offering harmony and balance to the body, the mind and the spirit.

Personally, after losing both my parents and facing the challenging task of relocating from Kazakhstan to England, yoga has been an indispensable companion on my journey of healing and provided me with an invaluable community. I had the chance to reach deep within and analyse myself and the world; chill out with meditation and breathing techniques; improve my flexibility (as I was not very bendy at the start); and be sociable, meeting new people and making friends at yoga classes. When I neglected my yoga lessons for a prolonged period of time, I personally experienced run down health, emotional struggles and flare ups. However, through soothing asanas and mindful breathing, Yoga classes provided a sanctuary for me to release tension and find solace amidst grief and uncertainty. The practice has enabled me to cultivate self-awareness, embrace change, and ignite a deep connection with myself. With each yoga session, I am reminded that despite the hardships, there is a wellspring of strength within me patiently waiting to be discovered and unleashed. Yoga has been a transformative force, assisting me in finding balance, resilience, and inner peace during the most challenging times of my life. Therefore, I wish to share and teach yoga to people because it has had a profoundly positive impact on my own physical and mental well-being. Yoga has helped me find inner peace, improve my flexibility, and cultivate a deeper connection with my body. By inviting people to join my classes, I hope to create a space where individuals can experience the transformative power of yoga and discover the numerous benefits it can bring to their own lives.

I visit the Bhava Yoga Studio in Whickham regularly and really enjoy the class and teachings. Janara is a wonderful teacher and the class is for all levels, with easier and more complex variations of poses offered. Even though you feel like you've worked out I always come out more relaxed. The warm up is very thorough, and the teacher is always very mindful over different peoples abilities and always offers advice and corrections where necessary. Overall I would highly recommend this class, its provides practical and physical knowledge in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

Embracing the Spiritual Essence of Yoga: Insights from the Yoga Sutras

Wednesday, 03 Apr 2024

In the bustling cacophony of our daily lives, where distractions abound and the mind is constantly pulled in myriad directions, the ancient wisdom of yoga offers a sanctuary of clarity and serenity. Rooted in the teachings of the Yoga Sutras, a timeless guide penned by the sage Patanjali, yoga serves as a pathway to inner peace, self-discovery, and spiritual enlightenment. Let us embark on a journey through the first four Sutras, unraveling their profound insights into the essence of yoga and its transformative power on the mind, body, and soul.

At the heart of the Yoga Sutras lies the concept of “Citta,” often translated as ordinary awareness or the mind-stuff. Sri Swami Satchinanda eloquently encapsulates its significance, stating, “Everything begins in the mind. If you want to see clearly, you need clear vision.” This metaphor finds resonance in the imagery of the lotus flower, which emerges pristine and unblemished from the murky depths of muddy waters. Despite its surroundings, the lotus remains untainted, drawing nourishment from within. Similarly, the Sutras remind us that amidst the turbidity of our consciousness, clarity can emerge from the depths of our spirit—if only we cultivate mental clarity through adherence to the teachings.

In the opening verse, “Atha Yoganusasanam” (1.1), Patanjali issues a call to action: “Now the exposition of Yoga is made.” The word “Atha,” meaning “now,” serves as a clarion call to embrace yoga in the present moment, urging practitioners to eschew procrastination and dive into the practice without delay. This injunction holds profound relevance in our modern era, where distractions abound, and the temptation to postpone important endeavors looms large. Just as Patanjali exhorts his students to seize the moment, contemporary practitioners are encouraged to let go of anxieties and doubts, and fully immerse themselves in the transformative journey of yoga.

Moreover, “Atha” embodies a deeper spiritual principle—the art of being present. In a world characterized by constant flux and ceaseless activity, yoga beckons us to anchor ourselves in the present moment, transcending the illusions of past and future. This timeless wisdom echoes across cultures, resonating with the adage, “Carpe Diem”—seize the day. By embracing the essence of “Atha,” practitioners cultivate mindfulness and awareness, nurturing a profound connection with the ever-unfolding tapestry of life.

As we traverse the sacred terrain of the Yoga Sutras, let us heed the timeless wisdom they impart. Through the practice of yoga, may we find solace in the depths of our being, clarity amidst chaos, and liberation from the shackles of the mind. In the words of Patanjali, let us embark on the journey of yoga here and now, for therein lies the path to spiritual awakening and profound transformation.
